Volkswagen to begin recall of vehicles

Car maker Volkswagen has announced that it will be issuing a major recall of diesel cars, after over a million vehicles in Europe and the United States were found to contain software designed to falsely reduce emissions.

The so called Defeat devices were designed to monitor the car and detect when it was under going emissions testing, in such circumstances the software put the engine into a safety mode which reduce performance and emissions, resulting in a false emission reading.

Cars in the United Kingdom pay tax based on their emissions, however the UK government has stated that there will not be an increase in taxation for drivers found to have purchased such vehicles.

Volkswagen is facing a criminal investigating in Germany, and may face legal action in other countries.

The companies TrustBase rating was reduced to Warning, and the event was given a Severe rating.
